Rien Wertheim: Driving healthcare collaboration with interoperability standards

Have you ever visited the doctor's office and had to fill them in on parts of your medical history because they couldn’t see it in their system?

Simplifying the sharing of health data.

Meet Rien Wertheim, the CEO and co-founder of Firely, a pioneering force in healthcare technology. Wertheim and his colleagues at Firely are transforming the way health data is transferred between systems, regardless of how it’s stored in different computer systems. In other words, they're simplifying the sharing of electronic health data between systems – safely.

A global standard for interoperability.

With over 30 years in healthcare tech, Wertheim started at Furore, a top Dutch HealthTech firm, where he led for 24 years before founding Firely. Firely focuses solely on FHIR solutions, solving the problem of health records being stored in silos within different computer systems. Now, as regulations push for FHIR, Firely is helping healthcare systems globally to embrace this new system.

But what is FHIR?

Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) is the standard for interoperability of the future. It is based on modern technology proven successful in other industries, like RESTful APIs and JSON. Maintained by a global non-profit organization, HL7, where experts from around the world collaborate to build open-source healthcare technology, FHIR enables innovation and facilitates patient-centric, cross-institutional healthcare. FHIR changes how different computer systems share important health data safely. It's like how internet links work, making data accessible to everyone who needs it.

FHIR enables third-party app developers to build apps that interact with the health system. FHIR is increasingly being used as the standard for AI and clinical decision support. Helix has been advocating for the adaptation of FHIR in Iceland and as of last week the Icelandic government confirmed to use FHIR as the preferred standard for health information exchange. The exciting next step is now to implement the use of FHIR in the Icelandic healthcare system.
